Who We Are

What The Students Had to Say

The following are excerpts from e-mails from Summer of a Lifetime students to their SOL Mentors:

I am writing to you to let you know how my class is going. I have meet many people with disabilities at the Thompson Center. I understand the concept of ASL [American Sign Language] now and I feel I have accomplished something wonderful.
    ~Araceli, Columbia University

…I am having a really great time here in Georgetown. I’m taking two classes, the am class is Crime Scene Investigation. My pm class is Spy Operations of the 20th Century. They are very interesting and fun classes. I really like them. I really like the dorms I live on the first floor… I've met people from New York, Los Angeles, even from France and Spain. So there are people from all over the world here. I really like that because not only do you meet people from the states, but also people from other countries and you learn what it is like in their countries. I have had so much fun here, I really enjoyed going to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other places. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and I will never forget it… I really wouldn’t give up this experience for anything in the world.
    ~Cuitlahuac, Georgetown University

First off, I would like to give my sincere appreciation to all of the sponsors that did not just sponsor me, but sponsored all the students that benefited from this prestigious foundation, the Right Angle Foundation. Without the sponsors, many of us wouldn’t even have been able to pay for the application fee. Your gratitude will not go undeserved. I have the beliefs that people you barely know are able to help you in tremendous ways. That is what the sponsors here did for us. They were able to share their wealth with us so that our generation may flourish and care for other generations with the career choices we make for ourselves. When we finally stabilize our lives with a good living, an excellent career, and a joyful family, we will look back and say, ‘Without our sponsors, we wouldn’t have been able to get where we are today because they enabled us to experience a true summer of excellence that did not just teach us educationally, but also morally, appreciatively, and spiritually.’ Thank you so much…especially, my sponsors, for giving me the chance to attend a program that many may never get to attend, providing me with the constant belief that every life is precious, including mine. Thank you again everyone, my sincere appreciation is so strong that it is unable to be spoken in words, but only in thought and spirit.
    ~Daniel, University of Arizona

…the friends I made there were awesome... I had so much fun there and wished it never ended.
    ~Dionne, Stanford University

The class I took at Milwaukee School of Engineering was an architectural engineering class. For the class, we had to make floor plans for a building and then actually build a small model of it. They gave us some restrictions and certain rooms and measurements that needed to be added. They put us in pairs of two's or three's, and in the end everyone had a pretty good design…
    ~Fernando, Milwaukee School of Engineering

I am writing to tell you that you made this summer a unique experience for me and I will forever be grateful for what you have done. I took the Electronics I… Thank you once again.
    ~Gerardo, Columbia College

…I have been at Dickinson for 4 days now. Today was my 2nd day of class. My first class is Sociology… Then I have history… Carlisle is a beautiful small town. This is so different from Chicago…
    ~Jennifer, Dickinson College

…I like my professor for Sociology. We have many discussions. My professor for history is a little boring but she is so sweet… I think you are right about me being busy with classes and not having time to think about being away from home. I have 2 papers to write and 4 tests to worry about. I'm sure that those will keep me busy. I know this is for the best and I am so lucky to have been chosen for this great opportunity. Thank you so much for all that you have done for me.
    ~Jennifer, Dickinson College

…I spent my whole Saturday at Hershey Park. It was so much fun. I went on the chocolate tour and I saw Amish people, too… I had an English midterm today. I was so happy because it was so easy and everyone else in my class was stressing out. I have another midterm in Sociology on Wednesday. I also went on a ghost tour on Friday. They told us all the ghost stories around campus…
    ~Jennifer, Dickinson College

Well, I’m back in Chicago and I have to say that I already miss Dickinson. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I still keep in touch with most of my friends from New Jersey, Georgia, Philadelphia, New York and Maryland… My professor was really cool and treated us as college students which gave us the full college experience. I hope to become a RA when I am at the right age at Dickinson. Thank you so much for making this once in a life time chance possible for me and [my] family.
    ~Julia, Dickinson College
