Our Mission
The Right Angle Educational Foundation's (Right Angle) mission is to create awareness of and provide funding for prestigious university-sponsored summer programs that increase access to higher education for low-income high school students in Chicago's West Town community.
"…I greatly appreciate everything that you have done for me. You gave me an occupant summer, and kept me off the streets of inner city Chicago. I don't only thank you on my behalf, but on my family's. You gave my mom a view of what I can do, you brought my father and me closer together, my brothers were proud of me, but overall you gave me confidence and let me see that anyone can make it out…. Some people I didn't even know [on campus] came up to me and asked me if it was true that I was on a scholarship and congratulated me and told me how lucky I was. It made me feel good to know that I could impact people that I didn't even know…. Before, I used to say "if" I go to college. Now, after you helped me go to this program I say "when" I go to college…" - Adrian from University of Michigan
What is the Right Angle?
The Right Angle is a not-for-profit organization incorporated under IRC Section 501 (c) (3) in the State of Illinois on December 17, 1996. We provide financial support for low-income high school students in Chicago's West Town community through two programs:
Summer of a Life Time Program
Enables low-income high school students to participate in summer college enrichment programs at universities throughout the world. Each year we send 50-60 qualified students to Summer of a Lifetime programs.
College Scholarship Program
Provides students who have attended the Summer of a Lifetime programs scholarships to cover college expenses.
The Right Angle Was Formed Because...
- A college degree is often a low-income family's ticket out of poverty.
- Low-income and first-generation high school students often do not consider a four year college as a possibility after graduation. Access to these summer college enrichment programs provides academic preparation for and exposure to four year colleges - significantly increasing the chance they will attend one after high school.
- Relatively few low-income, Chicago high school students go on to live on college campuses. Studies show that students who live on campus are far more likely to succeed in college than those that live at home.
